パレスチナ人のビシャラ・ハロニ（写真左）とイスラエル人のヤロン・コールベルク（写真右）は、オスロのオペラハウスで行われた平和コンサートで共演し、大成功を収め、2011年に恒久的なパートナーシップを結び、“デュオ・アマル”を結成した。デュオ・アマルの活動は、政治や国の違いを越えた音楽のコラボレーションである。また、マエストロ、ズービン・メータは彼らの最大の理解者のひとりである。
アラビア語で“希望”を意味する“アマル”は、彼らの演奏活動の背景にある、意義あるメッセージを表している。彼らは、比類のない音楽家であるというだけではない。イスラエルとパレスチナの対立関係の改善を願い、“平和”への極めて重要なメッセージを発信しているのだ。
メトロポリタン美術館（ニューヨーク）、ベートーヴェン音楽祭（ボン）、メルボルン国際アートフェスティヴァル、北京音楽庁、武蔵野市民文化会館（東京）、高陽市アート・センター（韓国）など世界各地での演奏や、イスラエル・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団などの著名なオーケストラとの共演は、非常に熱狂的な賞賛を得ている。
メトロポリタン美術館でのコンサートについて、音楽評論家ヘンリー・ロルニックは、“ほとんどの若い演奏家は、ダイナミックな演奏を表現することだけに注力しがちである”とし、次のように結んでいる。“言うまでもなく、デュオ・アマルは臆することなく自然体で、猛然たる演奏と柔らかな表現を繰り返す。この2つの感情は、2人のすばらしい音楽的つながりが自然であるのと同様、彼らにもともと備わっているものであろう”。
また、シドニー・ヘラルドは、デュオ・アマルの演奏を“スリリング”と、ザ・ストレーツ・タイムス（シンガポール）は“メロディーと対位旋律の結びつきは、完璧に近い。目眩がするようなハイ・スピード。”と評した。
今後は、サル・コルトー（パリ）、クラヴィス・センター（フロリダ）、ミュンヘン・レジデンツでのコンサートや、北アメリカ、南アメリカ、オーストラリア、アジア、ヨーロッパの主要コンサートホールでのコンサート・ツアーが予定されている。
2人はそれぞれソリストとしても活躍している。ハロニは、ハノーファー音楽院を卒業。ロリン・マゼール、ダニエル・バレンボイムらと共演し、また、ロンドン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団や、イスラエル・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団など、著名なオーケストラと共演している。
コールベルクは数多くの国際ピアノ・コンクールで受賞歴を持ち、その中にはクリーヴランド国際コンクール（第二位）、パルナッソス国際コンクール（第一位）、トップ・オブ・ザ・ワールド国際ピアノ・コンクール（ノルウェー）などが含まれる。また、コールベルクは、カーネギー・ホール（ニューヨーク）、クレムリン（モスクワ）、国際連合ジュネーブ事務局のコンサートホールなどで演奏を行ってきている。

Protégés of Maestro Zubin Mehta, Palestinian Bishara Haroni and Israeli Yaron Kohlberg decided to join forces for a peace concert at the Oslo Opera House in 2011. The concert’s tremendous success resulted in a permanent partnership, aptly titled Duo Amal - a musical collaboration that transcends political and national differences.
Amal - the Arabic word for ‘hope’, reflects the meaningful message behind this duo's work. Together, they are not only a unique collaboration, but also aim to spread the urgent message for peace, within the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Duo Amal have performed before enthusiastic audiences in many significant venues worldwide. Among these are the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Beethovenfest Bonn, Melbourne Arts Festival, Beijing Concert Hall, Tokyo’s Musashino Center, and Korea’s Goyang Center of the Arts. They have also performed with some of the world’s leading orchestras, such as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO).
Following their concert at the New York MET, music critic Henry Rolnick praised the duo’s “lack of ego shown by few young musicians as dynamic as they are…” and summarized: “Needless to say, Duo Amal played with their usual energy, and in this rotation of ferocity and tenderness, two emotions which seem to come as natural to them as the naturalness of their wonderful musical partnership.”
The Sydney Herald described their playing as “thrilling”. The Straits Times further hailed it as, “close to perfection with melody closely allied with counterpoint, and driven at dizzying high speeds.”
Upcoming concert events will be held at the Salle Cortot in Paris, the Kravis Center in Florida, and the Residenz in Munich; as well as concert tours in major venues across North and South America, Australia, Asia, and Europe.
As soloists, each of the duo’s members is an accomplished virtuoso in his own right. Haroni completed his studies at the Hanover Hochschule für Musik und Theater. He has performed under the baton of such prominent conductors as Lorin Maazel and Daniel Barenboim, and collaborated with major orchestras including the London Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestras.
Kohlberg is the winner of ten prestigious international piano competitions, among them the Cleveland International Competition (second prize), Parnassos International Competition (first prize), and Top of the World, Norway. He has performed worldwide in some of the most renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kremlin in Moscow, the UN Hall in Geneva, among many others.
The skills of these two musicians, as well as their vital message of peace have led to wide international recognition and acclaim. Their repertoire, ranging from baroque to modern, also includes commissioned works by both Israeli and Palestinian composers.
Known for their mixture of humor, playfulness, and absolute meticulousness, Duo Amal are rapidly becoming a highlight in the international scene of classical music and a true testament that music can indeed break through the greatest of boundaries.
