She was born in Freiburg, Germany. At the age of 5 she started playing the piano and later studied with Rudolf Serkin in Basel, and the organ with Wolfgang Auler and Albert Schweitzer. In 1937 she was a prize winner at the Chopin International Competition in Warsaw. As a piano and harpsichord player she has given recitals and concerts around the world. Her various records include Well-tempered Klavier, Goldberg Variations, Brandenburg Concertos with Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra / Karajan, Harpsichord Concertos with Deutsche Bachsolisten, and others with Heinz Holliger, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Aurèle Nicolet, etc. She was professor at Freiburg Musikhochschule.
In April 2001, she died of heart failure at her home in the suburbs of Freiburg, aged 87. |
